A History of Beekeeping in the Princedom of Asturias

Bees are the only insects that have been exploited by the peasantry of the Princedom of Asturias for many centuries. Beekeeping has developed in two geographical areas in the region for the purposes of bee production: the Western Area (made up of the councils located to the west of the Narcea River) and the Eastern Area (comprising the councils located to the east of the same watercourse).
As regards the gastronomic recognition of Asturian honey, the Miel de Asturias Protected Geographical Indication is in the process of being officially created, in order to recognize in its labeling the authenticity and quality of the honey produced in the region. It is expected to be created before the end of 2020. The aim is to produce, initially, four hundred tonnes under this quality scheme.
